The fly line provides the mass that is required to transport the fly and present it to a fish in a controlled and precise manner. To work correctly the rating of the fly rod must match that of the fly line and there are tackle manufacturers’ table available that specify the weight range for each rated value.

The characteristics of a fly line are determined by its profile and manufacturers also provide diagrams of the profiles depicting the change in diameter along the length of line. Below are some typical examples.
